Safe Work Australia has released the nation’s latest workers’ compensation figures. The Australian Workers’ Compensation Statistics 2015-16 report provides an indication of Australia’s work health and safety performance over the 15 year period between 2000-01 and 2015-16.
According to the report, there were over 100,000 serious workers’ compensation claims in 2015-16 alone. The three occupations with the highest number of serious claims were labourers, machinery operators and drivers, and community and personal service workers. Agriculture, manufacturing, and construction were the worst hit industries. 90 per cent of claims were due to an injury or a musculoskeletal disorder, while 10 per cent were due to an illness.
The statistics also reveal that workers’ compensation costs are an increasing concern for employers. The median time lost for a serious claim has increased 33 per cent in the last 15 years, from 4.2 weeks to 5.6. Similarly, employers are also paying our more money per claim. The median compensation paid for a serious claim increased by 30 per cent, from $5,200 to $6,800 (adjusted for inflation).
