Australia has solidified its position as a global leader in work health and safety by becoming one of the first nations to ratify all 10 of the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) Fundamental Conventions. The milestone was marked on 29 October during a tripartite ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland, bringing together unions, employers, and government representatives, including members of Safe Work Australia, the Australian Council of Trade Unions, and the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The latest ratification of the Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention 187 underscores Australia's dedication to embedding workplace health and safety as a fundamental right. This achievement complements ongoing national initiatives such as the Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2023-2033, enhanced guidance on psychosocial hazards, and regulations to address issues like sexual harassment and the ban on engineered stone products.
Marie Boland, CEO of Safe Work Australia, highlighted the significance of this accomplishment:
“Australia is a world leader in work health and safety, and becoming one of the first nations to ratify all 10 of the ILO’s Fundamental Conventions underscores our commitment to workplace health and safety as a fundamental principle and right.”
Ms. Boland also emphasised how the ratifications align with Australia's WHS framework, ensuring consistency with international best practices.
“I’m delighted to see Australia’s commitment to ensuring every worker gets home safely recognised on the world stage today, and look forward to collaborating with Safe Work Australia members on the important work that makes this commitment a reality.”
With this ratification, Australia strengthens its global reputation as a trailblazer in work health and safety. The recognition further motivates efforts to improve workplace conditions and protect all workers, ensuring that Australia's WHS practices remain aligned with evolving global standards.
