Learn more about the free newly released augmented reality (AR) Interactive Guide to help the power and electrical industries improve their health, safety and environmental (HSE) outcomes.
The following is an abridgement of an article originally appearing on the NSCA Foundation website.
Distributed to electricians, electrical contractors and wholesalers, and power and utility providers, the AR Interactive - Power, Electrical & Renewable Energy Guide to Safety 2023/24 is developed with interactive augmented reality (AR) capabilities for use with a smart device.
The AR Interactive Guide is a free resource that uses AR to help electricians, electrical contractors and wholesalers, and power and utility providers to improve their health, safety and environmental (HSE) outcomes. The guide is endorsed by the NSCA Foundation and supported by Before You Dig Australia (BYDA).
It is part of a workplace safety initiative by Pro-Visual Publishing, which aims to improve WHS education and training supported by advances in digital technology and AR. Pro-Visual Publishing CEO John Hutchings said,
“The biggest impact of digitisation can be seen in how it can revolutionise engagement, which underpins success and effectiveness, by reducing risk to improve health and safety performance overall. This vital free workplace safety initiative would not be possible without the ongoing support from our corporate sponsors and industry associations.”
Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that superimposes computer-generated images, sounds, or other information onto a user’s view of the real world, creating a composite and interactive experience. AR can enhance one’s perception of reality, e.g. by adding sounds, text and images. It can also provide access to data and insights that are otherwise invisible or hard to obtain. For example, AR can show you how to use a machine safely, or warn you about a hazard, or give you information about something you are looking at. AR is different from virtual reality (VR), which makes you feel like you are in a different world. AR adds to the real world, while VR replaces it.
The AR Interactive Guide is designed to be used with a smart device and the free Pro-Vis AR App. Users can scan the guide with the app to access interactive resources such as videos and 3D animations. These resources can help users to engage effectively on matters relating to key strategic actions and procedures that aim to reduce the impact of industry-specific risk factors and promote protective factors.
The AR Interactive Guide covers a range of topics that are relevant to the power, electrical, and renewable energy industries. Some of the topics include:
