What is the Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative?

The Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative (HVSI) is a program that funds new projects that will boost heavy vehicle safety and deliver tangible improvements for industry. The Australian Government has committed $4.4 million for Round 9 of the HVSI, run by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR).

What are the themes and criteria for the project submissions?

Project submissions must directly address at least one of the themes: safer drivers, safer vehicles or safer road use – by investing in driver or supply chain skills and training, vehicle safety technologies and improvements, or heavy vehicle educational tools and resources. The projects must also demonstrate how they will achieve safety outcomes, engage with stakeholders, and measure and evaluate their impact.

How and when can I apply?

Submissions are now open and close at 5pm AEST 19 February 2024. You can apply online by filling out the application form and following the project guidelines, which detail eligibility and the submission process. You can find the form and the guidelines here.

What are the benefits of the HVSI?

The HVSI aims to support projects that will deliver safety benefits across the heavy vehicle freight industry and supply chain. The program has invested more than $38 million into 153 initiatives over the previous rounds funded to date. Some of the projects funded include roadside health and wellness screening, online training programs, and increasing safety for vulnerable road users. The program also aims to reduce road trauma and save lives by keeping road safety front of mind.

What are the testimonials from the program leaders?

The program is endorsed by the Federal Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Carol Brown and the NHVR Chief Executive Officer Sal Petroccitto OAM. They both expressed their commitment to making our roads safer, by supporting initiatives that address key issues in the transport and logistics sector and provide workable solutions. Carol Brown says,
