Safe Work Australia has released the Baseline Report for the Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2023-2033. This report provides an initial snapshot of the WHS landscape in 2023, marking the launch of the Strategy aimed at achieving “Safe and healthy work for all” over the next decade.
The Strategy outlines a national vision and sets out key targets and actions needed to address WHS challenges, including psychosocial risks, the impact of AI and automation, and new work arrangements such as gig work. It provides a unified goal for stakeholders and a roadmap for improving WHS outcomes.

The Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2023-2033 includes eight key targets to improve worker safety:
- Reduce Worker Fatalities: Aim for a 30% decrease in traumatic injury-related fatalities.
- Decrease Serious Claims: Achieve a 20% reduction in serious claims leading to one or more weeks off work.
- Lower Permanent Impairment: Cut the frequency rate of permanent impairment by 15%.
- Minimise Work-Related Injuries: Reduce overall work-related injury or illness incidence to below 3.5%.
- Eliminate Accelerated Silicosis: Ensure no new cases of accelerated silicosis by 2033.
- Reduce Respiratory Diseases: Aim for a 20% reduction in work-related respiratory disease frequency.
- Raise Awareness: All Safe Work Australia Members will enhance awareness about protecting workers from harmful substances with new workplace exposure standards.
- Strengthen Compliance: Build capability among PCBUs, regulators, and workers to manage psychosocial risks effectively.
