SafeWork NSW has launched a three-year plan, the Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD) Prevention Plan to 2026, aimed at reducing MSDs, the most common work-related injuries in New South Wales. With MSDs accounting for over half of all serious injury claims and costing an average of $64,759 per claim, the plan targets both physical and psychosocial risk factors to create safer workplaces.
MSDs refer to injuries or diseases affecting muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints. Common causes include repetitive movements, lifting, and falls, and they can develop suddenly or progressively over time.
This initiative aligns with the Australian WHS Strategy 2023-2033 and encourages NSW workplaces to prioritise safe practices that protect worker health, reduce costs, and boost productivity.
