A series of webinars, workplace competitions, an incident simulation, and a mock trial are among the South Australian events planned for October’s National Safe Work Month.
National Safe Work Month is an annual event that aims to improve work health and safety (WHS) and prevent work-related injuries and deaths. The theme for 2023 is For everyone’s safety, work safely. The event has been held since 2009 after workplace deaths in Australia reached a peak of 310 in 2007.
SafeWork SA is encouraging businesses, employers, and workers to participate in various activities during October that highlight workplace safety and promote healthy working environments. Some of the events include:
The Augusta Zadow Awards will be presented during the month at a Government House ceremony on 18 October.
The popular ‘Organise Your Own Workplace Activity’ competition is running again. Workplaces are encouraged to start planning an activity that will raise awareness about important work health and safety issues.Businesses can win a prize from the $2,000 prize pool. The competition runs throughout the month so workplaces can register their activity anytime until 31 October 2023.
A challenge to join the billion-step milestone, which is equivalent to walking from Earth to the moon and back.
There will be a series of webinars throughout the month and an incident investigation simulation to demonstrate the early stages of the investigation process following a workplace incident. The mock trial will be open to the public and will provide insights into the legal framework around work health and safety laws at Marion Cultural Centre on 19 October.
Workplaces are encouraged to organise a SafeTea event. The events emphasise the importance of involving everyone in Work Health and Safety discussions by encouraging workplaces to grab a cuppa and chat.
