WorkSafe Mines Safety is reminding employers to carefully assess the validity of training competencies and qualifications, even if they appear to be from recognised Nationally Accredited Training organisations, after discovering falsified certificates and falsified trainer credentials in the Emergency Response sector of the mining industry. In addition, the department has also recently been made aware of falsified certificates of competency in the underground sector.
Training certificates listing national competencies are only issued to workers who have been appropriately trained and assessed as competent to perform tasks and activities safely.
Employers must develop and maintain safe systems of work to ensure that employees are provided with information, instruction and training to enable them to perform their work in a manner that they are not exposed to hazards.
Anyone who has concerns about the validity of training certificates can verify the details by contacting the training provider that issued the certificate or by contacting DMIRS for further advice.
It is important to note when the department identifies fraud in relation to training competencies and qualifications, these cases are referred to the Australian Skills and Quality Authority and the Western Australian Police.
