SafeWork SA is offering funding up to $25,000 for health and safety initiatives supporting young workers and women in the workplace through the 2022 Augusta Zadow Awards.
he annual awards were established in recognition of efforts of Augusta Zadow, who in 1895 became South Australia’s first female inspector of factories. She played a crucial role in securing better conditions for employees, particularly women and children.
South Australian businesses and individuals are invited to submit an application outlining their idea for research, educational program or solution that improves the health and safety of women or young people working in South Australia.
SafeWork SA Executive Director, Martyn Campbell said “the 2022 Augusta Zadow Award grants will take SafeWork SA’s investment into health and safety innovation and research to date to nearly $350,000”.
“The Augusta Zadow Awards continue the legacy of Augusta Zadow in improving health and safety for women and young workers”.
“It is part of SafeWork SA’s ongoing commitment to support future workplace safety through practical outcomes and evidence-based research. We want to encourage people to think about doing safety differently in order to benefit the wider community”, said Mr Campbell.
Last year’s award recipients shared in $25,000 with two projects providing a focus on rural and health care workers. Stephanie Schmidt received $15,000 to develop a program which will help build resilient farmers, farming businesses and farming families.
$10,000 was granted to the Flinders Health and Medical Institute, Appleton Institute and SA Ambulance Service to develop education, training and support materials to help young paramedics cope with shift work, sleep loss and fatigue.
Since the Augusta Zadow Awards grants program first launched in 2005, SafeWork SA has awarded 33 grants to fund safety initiatives benefiting businesses, workers and the community.

Successful applicants will be announced as part of National Safe Work Month events for October.
